EL PASO, Texas – Customs agents seized 195 pounds of marijuana inside a rail car near a border crossing in El Paso, Texas, authorities said.
According to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, officers on Wednesday were conducting a search at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crossing west of the Paso Del Norte port of entry.
The CBP canine alerted officers to an odor coming from one of the hopper cars, KFOX-TV reported. A search resulted in 70 bundles filled with marijuana, according to the television station. In addition, agents discovered two bags of cocaine totaling 5 pounds, customs officials said.
“All rail shipments entering the U.S. from Mexico are subject to several layers of enforcement,” Ray Provencio, director of the El Paso port of entry, said in a statement. “Each car is scanned by an x-ray system while CBP officers and CBP canine teams at the rail crossing inspect the train as it arrives.”
Agents seized the marijuana and cocaine. No arrests have been made.
Customs officials said an investigation is ongoing.
