The accident occurred on the highway between Cesena and Rimini, on Italy’s northeastern coast, Reuters reported. Italian state radio reported that the bus was traveling on the A14 autostrada near Forli near the Adriatic Sea. It said the rest of those aboard were safely evacuated.

The bus landed on its side on a grassy slope beyond a highway guardrail and near a farm field, according to The Associated Press. Firefighters used two cranes to lift the bus upright and remove it.

According to Italy’s Interior Ministry, the bus had left Ukraine and was traveling to the Adriatic port city of Pescara when it overturned, the AP reported.

The vehicle’s passengers were taken to nearby police barracks for assistance and would later resume their trip, the ministry said.

Officials are trying to determine what caused the bus to overturn, the AP reported.

More than 35,000 Ukrainian refugees who have fled since Russia invaded their homeland three weeks ago have entered Italy, many through the country’s northeastern border with Slovenia, according to the AP.
