NEW YORK – Two women were stabbed inside the Museum of Modern Art on Saturday, causing dozens of people to be evacuated from the New York City museum.
Update 10:27 p.m. EDT March 13 : Officials with the New York Police Department on Sunday identified a man accused of stabbing two Museum of Modern Art employees after he was denied entry due to a revoked membership.
On Sunday morning, police released surveillance video from the West 53rd Street museum of a man believed to be 60-year-old Gary Cabana jumping over the reception desk and stabbing the two women, The New York Times reported.
According to police, a 24-year-old woman stabbed in the back and neck and a 24-year-old man stabbed in the left collar bone were listed in stable condition Sunday at an area hospital.
“The video shows the man barrel through a revolving door and climb across the wooden counter with a knife in his hand, cornering three people behind the desk. After stumbling into a wall, he begins jabbing and swinging the knife while the employees cower under the desk,” the Times reported.
Original report: According to the New York City Police Department, the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. EST Saturday, WCBS-TV reported.
The two victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, WNBC-TV reported. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, police said. Police did not say where the women were stabbed or what prompted the attack, according to WPIX.
Investigators believe the suspect, who is known to police, fled the building shortly after the incident, according to WNBC.
Several patrons inside the museum posted videos on social media, the television station reported. Guests were escorted out of the building with no explanation.
The museum could not be reached for comment.
