Feds seize meth worth more than $1.5M at Texas crossing
BROWNSVILLE, Texas – U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Brownsville, Texas, thwarted a “significant” methamphetamine smuggling attempt Thursday at the Gateway International Bridge.
According to a news release issued by the agency, a 44-year-old Brownsville woman applied for entry to the United States, but her 2008 Ford pickup was referred for a secondary inspection. Investigators discovered 24 packages, containing nearly 77 pounds of suspected meth, within the truck.
“Our officers used their experience and inspection skills to intercept this significant load of prohibited narcotics, delivering another significant blow to illicit drug trafficking in our area,” Tater Ortiz, director of the Brownsville Port of Entry, stated.
The estimated street value of the meth totaled more than $1.53 million, the agency stated.
CBP officers seized the narcotics along with the vehicle, arrested the driver and turned her over to Homeland Security Investigations special agents for further investigation.
