Border Patrol canine sniffs out $60K worth of fentanyl hidden in breakfast burritos
YUMA, Ariz. – A U.S. Customs and Border Protection canine had a nose for sniffing out nearly $60,000 worth of fentanyl, finding the pills stuffed inside breakfast burritos.
According to a news release, border patrol agents at the Yuma Sector found 5 pounds of fentanyl on Monday.
A 37-year-old man driving a Chevrolet Tahoe was directed to the checkpoint’s secondary inspection area by a canine handler at about 3 p.m, KTVK reported. The canine alerted agents to a black backpack that was located inside the vehicle, according to the news release. When agents searched the backpack, they discovered several small packages of fentanyl that were inside the breakfast burritos.

Agents said the narcotics had a street value of nearly $60,000, according to the news release.
The man, a legal resident of the United States, was arrested, and the fentanyl was seized and processed, according to CBP guidelines.
“Smugglers are under the false assumption that they can disguise drugs within food to throw off canines and their handlers,” the CBP said in its news release. “On the contrary, canines have the ability to detect a target odor among a myriad of other odors.”
