CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. – Sheriff’s deputies in Clackamas County arrested a man over the weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol despite a sticker on his car which read, “not drunk avoiding potholes.”
Authorities arrested Jeffery Dewayne Cannon, 41, late Saturday night after a deputy driving on Highway 26 near Sandy noticed him speeding around 11 p.m. The deputy, who was driving a marked patrol car, pulled over to see if the Volkswagen Jetta that Cannon was driving would pass him, officials said.
“The vehicle did in fact pass the patrol car — at a speed estimated between 80 and 90 mph,” deputies said in a news release.
The deputy pulled Cannon over a short while later and called out to him to turn off his car, though officials said Cannon didn’t respond. Instead, the deputy watched as the Jetta rolled backward about 25 feet, stopping when it hit the front of the patrol car, officials said.
When asked about why he let the car roll back, Cannon said he “didn’t know that happened,” according to deputies.
Cannon said he had a concealed, loaded Glock handgun in his car, which he turned over to the deputy. Later, the deputy noticed that the gun didn’t have a serial number on it, officials said.
The deputy who pulled Cannon over reported that he smelled alcohol inside the car and spotted an open can of Busch Light in the Jetta’s cupholder. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, authorities determined the beer can was half-full. Several other empty beer cans were also found in the car, along with a baggie of cocaine.
“Mr. Cannon explained that he planned to party with a friend this weekend,” deputies said.
During a field sobriety test, Cannon said he guessed his results would be “not good,” authorities said. After taking a breath sample from him, officials measured his blood alcohol concentration at .22%, more than twice the legal limit of .08%.
Authorities arrested Cannon on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence of intoxicants — alcohol, and possession of a controlled substance — cocaine. Officials said they also determined that Cannon was driving on a suspended license.
He was booked into jail with bail set at $15,000.
