According to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents discovered the stash house in El Cenizo, a town south of Laredo separated from Mexico by the Rio Grande.

Agents found the stash house after they responded to suspicious activity at a residence after a vehicle accident, according to the news release. The people found inside the house were from Mexico and Guatemala, authorities said.

“Stash houses are a threat to national security and a threat to the people in our communities not only due to the criminal activity they are linked to but also because of the lack of sanitary conditions, which can foster a breeding ground for illnesses or other communicable diseases,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said in a news release.

On Monday, county and federal authorities dismantled a stash house near Martin High School in Laredo, the Laredo Morning Times reported. Authorities detained 11 people who had crossed the border illegally, the newspaper reported.
