He had been receiving treatment for an infection, according to The Associated Press.

Thomas had been admitted last Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

On Sunday, the court said he had an infection and was being treated with intravenous antibiotics. It was expected he would be discharged either Monday or Tuesday, but he was discharged today instead.

The court did not say what infection Thomas had or why the stay was longer than planned but said he did not have COVID-19 and had been vaccinated and boosted against the virus, the AP reported.

He had missed arguments earlier this week but he would review the cases using briefs filed by all parties and transcripts of the arguments presented.

Thomas was appointed to the high court by former President George H.W. Bush in 1991.

In recent days, there have been reports that his wife, Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, had sent text messages asking former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows to try to overturn the 2020 presidential election, keeping former President Donald Trump in the office instead of President Joe Biden, both The Washington Post and CBS News reported.

There were 29 messages that had been exchanged between the justice’s wife and Meadows in the weeks following the November 2020 election, at the same time Trump supporters said they would go to the Supreme Court to void have the election results, the AP reported.

One of the first messages came on Nov. 1,0 when Biden had been declared the winner. The Post and CBS News said the text sent by Virginia Thomas to Meadows read: “Help This Great President stand firm, Mark!!! … You are the leader, with him, who is standing for America’s constitutional governance at the precipice. The majority knows Biden and the Left is attempting the greatest Heist of our History.”

Meadows responded to her in a message: “This is a fight of good versus evil. Evil always looks like the victor until the King of Kings triumphs. Do not grow weary in well doing. The fight continues. I have staked my career on it. Well at least my time in DC on it,” the Post reported.
