According to a Facebook post by the Palm Bay Police Department, officers received a call Wednesday about a dog stuck in the mud in a canal in Palm Bay.

Officers responding to the site saw a golden retriever that was unable to move. Officer Carrol, a K9 officer, “sprung into action” and soothed the frightened pooch while attaching a leash around the animal’s neck. The dog stopped whimpering and barking, and Carrol steadied himself in the water.

The officer then gently lifted the dog out of the mud and took it to shore, the department wrote on Facebook.

“The water was cold, and it appeared the dog had been there for some time, worn out and tired,” the Palm Bay Police Department wrote in its post.

The dog had no collar or tags, but it was reunited with its owner later in the day, police said.
