Matthew Thomas Jr., 18, was arrested Friday and charged with aggravated assault after police said he shot a man as they argued in the Riverdale store about 15 miles south of downtown Atlanta, WSB-TV reported.

The victim’s condition remained unknown late Friday, but he is being treated at an area hospital, the TV station reported.

According to a news release issued by the Riverdale Police Department, an off-duty officer was working in the store part-time and called for backup after hearing the gunshots at around 7 p.m., The Macon Telegraph reported.

Meanwhile, Walmart employees arriving for work Thursday evening told WSB-TV that they were turned away and feared the worst when they saw the heavy police presence.

“We start at 9, and they told us to go home,” a worker told the station, adding, “We were wondering if our co-workers were hurt.”

According to online court records, Thomas is being held without bond om the Clayton County Jail.
