Renaldo Vera told The Chicago Tribune that his dog, Chicago, wouldn’t stop barking and that was what alerted him to screaming outside and glass breaking. Without knowing who needed help, he ran into action, helping to pull two people from a burning building.

That fire started in the basement of a building in Chicago’s Clearing neighborhood. Inside the building was a 7-year-old boy, his mother, and his grandparents, WGN reported. His grandmother was killed, but the boy and the rest of his family survived the fire.

Chicago’s fire department credited Vera and his dog for saving the lives of the family.
