PHOENIX – Phoenix police said Friday that nine officers and a woman were hurt in an ongoing standoff with a barricaded suspect.

Update 12:09 p.m. EST FEB 11: Phoenix police said that a total of nine officers were injured in the standoff, KNXV reported. Five were shot and bullet shrapnel hit four other officers.

Police said the woman and the suspect had been in a relationship and that the baby who had been rescued by police was their child, KNXV reported.

Update 11:03 a.m. EST Feb. 11: KNXV reported that the person who held police at bay for several hours was found dead inside the home.

Update 10:45 a.m. EST Feb. 11: The standoff has ended, KTVK reported. Police said there is no danger to the public.

Update 8:14 a.m. EST Feb. 11: According to KNXV, the suspect initially opened fire at an officer who approached the home. That officer suffered multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Later, someone left the home and placed a baby on the porch, KNXV reported. As officers approached, the shooter fired again, striking four officers, police said.

Although one of the officers was seriously hurt, all five are recovering, police said in a news conference at 6 a.m. MST.

A woman also suffered a critical gunshot wound in the standoff, which remains active, according to KNXV.

Original report: Phoenix police said early Friday that several officers and one other person have been hurt in an ongoing standoff with a barricaded suspect.

According to KTVK and KNXV, the “critical incident” began about 2 a.m. near the intersection of Elwood Street and 54th Avenue in south Phoenix, police said.

“Stay away for your safety,” the department warned residents in an overnight tweet.

Police later tweeted that officers were “working on a situation involving a barricaded subject inside a house.”

KTVK reported that emergency crews transported multiple officers to the hospital. Gunfire also can be heard in the area, according to the TV station.

No further information was immediately available.
