The victims, a 9-year-old and a 4-year-old whose names are being withheld by police until next-of-kin notification, were found by authorities at about 6 p.m. MST, KPHO reported. The children were originally identified, but police asked for their names to be withdrawn until relatives could be contacted, the television station reported.

The girls’ mother, who also was not identified, was also injured and was “suffering from what are believed to be multiple self-inflicted stab wounds,” according to Sgt. Andy Williams of the Phoenix Police Department.

The woman is reportedly in critical condition but is expected to survive, KPNX reported. Officers also detained the father of the children, who cooperated with detectives and was released, Williams said Thursday.

The cause and manner of the children’s deaths were not apparent to authorities because there were no obvious signs of trauma, KNXV reported. Authorities said the power had been cut to the home shortly before investigators arrived, the television station reported.

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Officer will determine the girls’ causes of death, KPHO reported.
