The names of the retired firefighters are Michael Verzi, Robert Reynolds, Vincent Mandala and John McCauley, according to CBS News.

According to a press release obtained by CNN from the New York City Fire Department, Verzi, Reynolds, Mandala and McCauley all died from long-term illnesses that affected first responders who worked at Ground Zero.

The Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York posted on Facebook that Deputy Chief Mandala died over the past week from a “WTC-related illness” after 42 years with the FDNY.

CBS News says that according to the FDNY, 287 members of the FDNY have died from illnesses related to working at Ground Zero. The FDNY did not disclose what their conditions were.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s World Trade Center Health Program monitors the exposure and conditions that first responders face as a result of 9/11. Some of the diseases include acute traumatic injuries like digestive and respiratory issues and some cancers including lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma, CNN says.
