CHICAGO – Three people were killed and two others were seriously injured during a shooting early Sunday in a southwest Chicago neighborhood, authorities said.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the shooting occurred while several vehicles were drag racing in the Brighton Park neighborhood of the city at about 4 a.m. CDT, WLS-TV reported.
Police believe the shootings may have been gang-related, according to WGN-TV.
The three victims who died were 15 to 20 years old and affiliated with a gang, WLS-TV reported. They have not yet been identified.
One of the males was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, according to WGN. Two other adults were transported to Holy Cross Hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival, the television station reported.
Two other victims are in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital but are expected to survive, WFLD-TV reported.
Police did not release any other details. It is unclear how the drag racing event, which was witnessed by more than 100 people, escalated into a shooting, according to WLS.
An investigation is ongoing.
