The girl’s mother was also arrested in the incident, which allegedly occurred after the child had been beaten by other students on the vehicle, NOLA.com reported. The website cited a police report and videos circulating on social media.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, the 12-year-old was charged with aggravated assault and her mother was charged with the principle of aggravated assault and for contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, WDSU-TV reported.

According to the video, two girls were fighting on a bus after school, WWL-TV reported. One girl, who was wearing a sweatshirt emblazoned with the word “Akili,” left the bus and returned with a gun, according to NOLA.com. The girl banged the weapon against the bus several times and attempted to open the door, the website reported. According to the video, students on the bus could be heard crying before the girl walked away.

The names of the girl and her mother were not released by police because a juvenile was involved.

In a statement, Crescent City Schools said the student is not at school and officials are working on disciplinary action.

“Crescent City Schools and Akili Academy are horrified by this brazen act of violence that happened off school campus,” the statement said. “School buses should be safe places of transport for our young people.”
