NEW YORK – Like mother, like daughter.

According to The Associated Press and People magazine, tennis legend Serena Williams and her nearly 5-year-old daughter, Olympia Ohanian, had fans seeing double Monday at the 2022 U.S. Open in New York. The youngster, clad in a glittery Nike dress like her mom, also wore the hairstyle that Williams sported when she claimed her first U.S. Open title 23 years ago: braids with white beads.

“It was either her wear beads or me, so … I wanted to do it, but I just didn’t have the time,” the 40-year-old, who has won 23 Grand Slam titles, said after winning her first-round match against Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3.

This could be the last U.S. Open and professional tennis tournament for Williams, who announced in a Vogue article earlier this month that she intends to retire from the sport, according to the AP.

“Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution,” she wrote in the magazine. “I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago, I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, and mother, Oracene Price, joined Olympia in the player’s box Monday to watch the match, which was followed by a ceremony celebrating the star athlete’s career, the AP reported.

“Tonight was all a surprise, actually, towards the end,” Williams told reporters afterward, according to the news agency. “I didn’t know any of that was happening.”
