DETROIT – A Michigan toddler is recovering after another young child shot him while playing with a gun in Detroit, authorities said.

According to WJBK and the Detroit Free Press, the incident occurred Tuesday at an Omira Street home. Detroit police said a 3- or 4-year-old child was playing with a firearm that discharged, striking a 3-year-old sibling or cousin, the Free Press reported.

Police arrived to find the injured boy “alert,” the newspaper reported, adding that officials expect him to recover from his wounds. No further information about his injuries was immediately available.

Investigators said another family member, about 13 years old, was home when the shooting occurred, but no adults were present, according to the Free Press.
