New York man arrested for allegedly stabbing 16-year-old girlfriend to death
MANHATTAN, N.Y. – A New York man has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his 16-year-old girlfriend to death.
The New York Police Department on Twitter said Tuesday morning that they had arrested Zyaire Crumbley and he has been charged with murder. The NYPD had been searching for him after a 16-year-old girl was found dead with a stab wound to her neck on Sunday.
Saniyah Lawrence, 16, was found with a stab wound to her neck inside an apartment on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard near West 135th Street at about 5:40 p.m. Sunday, according to WPIX. First responders took her to the hospital, where she died from her injuries.
Investigators described Crumbley, 18, as Lawrence’s boyfriend and a person of interest, according to WPIX.
According to WABC, Crumbley turned himself in with his attorney Monday evening. He was also reportedly taken to the hospital for an evaluation after he surrendered. Police said he was complaining of chest pains, so he spent a night at the hospital.
On Tuesday, he was taken from the hospital directly to court for his arraignment, according to WABC.
Crumbley reportedly thought Lawrence was cheating on him so he confronted her, which led to an argument that ultimately ended in her death, according to WABC.
Crumbley reportedly had four prior robbery arrests, including one that he was on probation for since May, according to WABC. He is reportedly suspected in at least two other robberies.
No further information has been released.
