In a news release, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said that a search for 5-year-old Kyle Doan continued Tuesday morning after he was swept away Monday afternoon near San Miguel. The extreme weather conditions forced the search to stop because it created unsafe conditions for first responders. However, the break in the weather allowed first responders to continue their search efforts.

Kyle and his mother were trapped in a car that was overtaken by water, according to KTLA. His mother was rescued by civilians but Kyle was swept away.

There was no evacuation order in the area at the time of the incident, according to The Associated Press.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office deployed a dive team to go through the flooded creeks and roadways looking for him, according to KTLA.

Additionally, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office used the Underwater Search and Rescue Team and air operations in Tuesday’s search. Conditions remained very dangerous with fast-moving, high water levels.

“The public is strongly cautioned not to conduct self-initiated searches and put themselves in harm’s way and become a victim requiring resources that would otherwise be used for searching,” said San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office described Kyle as having short dirty blonde hair, hazel eyes, being about 4 feet tall, and weighing about 52 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black puffer jacket with a red liner, blue jeans, and blue and gray Nike tennis shoes.

According to KTLA, Kyle has not been declared deceased.
