NEW YORK – The man accused of stabbing two employees at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City last March was indicted for attempted murder, prosecutors said Thursday.
According to a news release from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, Gary Cabana, 60, of New York City, was charged in New York State Supreme Court with two counts of attempted murder in the second degree, two counts of attempted assault in the first degree and two counts of assault in the second degree.
Cabana allegedly tried to enter the museum at 4:15 p.m. EST on March 12, 2022, and presented his membership card to workers. He was denied entry because his membership had been revoked.
Prosecutors said that Cabana returned later that afternoon, jumped over the ticket counter and stabbed the victims multiple times. The incident was caught on surveillance video.
“The video shows the man barrel through a revolving door and climb across the wooden counter with a knife in his hand, cornering three people behind the desk. The New Times reported. “After stumbling into a wall, he begins jabbing and swinging the knife while the employees cower under the desk.”

According to the New York Police Department, a 24-year-old woman was stabbed in the back and neck and a 24-year-old man was stabbed in the left collarbone.
The two victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, WNBC-TV reported. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, police said.
In Bragg’s news release, Cabana allegedly fled to Philadelphia, where he was arrested on arson charges after police said he set his hotel room on fire. He was extradited to Manhattan after pleading guilty to the charges in Pennsylvania, prosecutors said.
“As alleged, Gary Cabana brutally stabbed two employees of this historic cultural institution simply because he was banned from entering,” Bragg said in a statement. “Everyone deserves to be safe in their workplace, and we will not tolerate violence against hardworking New Yorkers.”
