Video posted online by the Newberry Township Police Department shows officers responding to the stop, and then one of the people inside the car comes out and opens the trunk. Video shows them lift the deer out of the trunk and then carry it across the road.

Police pulled the car over initially because they suspected the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol before discovering the animal in the hatchback, The Associated Press reported.

The people inside the car allegedly told police they knew the deer was alive, but kept driving anyway, the AP reported.

As the video shows, the animal was freed after the stop.
