Gun violence prompts New York school district to offer virtual learning
NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A New York school district is offering its families the option to return to virtual learning, but not because of COVID-19. The Newburgh Enlarged City School District is offering distance learning because of worsening gun violence in the area, WNBC reported.
In a notice on the district’s webpage, the acting superintendent said the district buildings would remain open, but that students in all grades would be offered the option to opt back into a virtual model.
The district shut its doors after several teens were shot in Newburgh on Nov. 17, WPIX reported. The victims were ages 16 to 18, and investigators said it was not clear whether the shootings were gang related.
The Newburgh Enlarged City School District serves approximately 11,000 students in an area north of New York City.
