According to the IRS, the agency will extend until May 17 the deadline for tax filers to make contributions to IRAs and health savings accounts.

Covered under the extended deadline are contributions to individual retirement arrangements (IRAs and Roth IRAs), health savings accounts (HSAs), Archer Medical Savings Accounts (Archer MSAs), and Coverdell Education Savings Accounts.

Additionally, the deadline to claim a past refund has been extended to May 17. Filers have three years to claim a tax refund. According to the agency, “the law requires taxpayers to properly address, mail and ensure the tax return is postmarked by the May 17, 2021, date.”

The agency stressed that while some deadlines have been extended, some have not. The deadline for estimated tax payments remains on April 15.

Last week, the IRS announced that the federal income tax filing due date for individuals for the 2020 tax year was extended from April 15 to May 17.
