Douglas Allen Hatley, 71, had loaded a downed pole onto the roof of his 1997 Toyota Camry and tried to take it to a recycling center but was turned away when he did not have documentation for it, WFLA reported.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers found Hatley shortly later driving with the pole still strapped to his car.

Hatley was arrested and charged with grand theft, according to jail records.

He has previously been charged with grand theft, dealing in stolen property and false information on a secondary metals recycler form in 2017, WFLA reported.
