According to KRVN and KSNB, the incident occurred about 3 a.m. Wednesday at a home on West 14th Street in Kearney. Crews responded to a report of an unresponsive infant and arrived to find the girl dead, the news outlets reported.

Investigators with Kearney police and the Buffalo County Attorney’s Office later determined that the baby died from “blunt force and cranial trauma caused by an American bulldog that resided with the family,” according to an Attorney’s Office news release. The child’s death is considered accidental, officials said.

The dog, which did not have a history of aggressive behavior, has been euthanized, the release said.
