AUBURN, Ala. – An Auburn University professor is accused of possession of child pornography, authorities said.

Amarjit Mishra, 42, of Auburn, an assistant professor at the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine, was arrested by Auburn police on June 2 and charged with five felony counts of possession of child pornography, the Opelika-Auburn News reported.

Mishra has been at Auburn since 2017, AL.com reported.

According to authorities, the arrest stems from an investigation initiated against Mishra by the Auburn Police Department and members of the Alabama Internet Crimes Against Children task force, WRBL-TV reported. The investigation began on March 24, 2022; according to charging documents, Mishra on May 23 was in possession of images of a child under the age of 17 engaged in sexual acts or nudity, AL.com reported.

Mishra was booked into the Lee County Jail, and his bail was set at $50,000, the News reported.

“We are aware of the allegations against and arrest of Amarjit Mishra,” Auburn University said in a statement. “He has been placed on administrative leave and is not on campus. Mishra will remain on leave while the University evaluates this matter.”
