CONROE, Texas – A 6-year-old Texas girl who was late for her school bus died Tuesday after she ran in front of the vehicle and was fatally struck, authorities said.
According to the Conroe Police Department, the girl, who lived near the bus stop, ran in front of the vehicle as it began to pull away at about 7:30 a.m., KTRK reported.
The bus driver did not see the girl and began driving, striking the child, KPRC reported.
According to witnesses, the child was breathing but unconscious, the television station reported. First responders arrived and began life-saving procedures, police said.
The child, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital, where she died at 8:42 a.m., KPRC reported.
Conroe police viewed dash camera footage from the bus, which they said backed up the bus driver’s story, KHOU reported.
“The Conroe Police Department sends prayers to the family, witnesses, and emergency responders for this tragedy,” the police department said in a statement.
