Two boaters had a whale of a scare Monday off the New Jersey coast.

A humpback whale struck a boat “a few dozen” yards off shore at a beach in Seaside Park, sending both occupants into the water, NJ.com reported.

According to community officials, the whale breached the surface and landed on the boat, causing its two occupants to be thrown overboard, WABC reported. The boat beached on the shore, the television station reported.

“The whale did what whales usually do — they’re looking for food, and they don’t pay attention,” Bob Schoelkopf, the director of the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, told NJ.com. “It breached the boat and knocked it out of the water.”

Police said the whale appeared to be indifferent to the incident, continuing to swim away after landing on the boat, WPVI reported. The whale did not appear to be injured, and neither was the boat’s occupants, the television station reported.
