TORRANCE, Calif. – A judge sentenced a California man who attacked a man in a bar bathroom who was wearing a red hat with the words “Make America Great Again” in Russian to four years in prison.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Thomas Sokolov sentenced David Delgado to four years in prison on Monday, the Los Angeles Daily News reported. He pleaded no contest in March to a felony count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, KTTV reported.
Delgado was previously ordered to attend anger management counseling and Alcoholics Anonymous meetings weekly leading up to the sentencing hearing, KTTV reported.
Delgado approached the victim Sept 2, 2019, in a bar bathroom and asked him what the words on his hat meant, NBC News reported. Delgado got angry when the man replied. He then repeatedly punched the man in the face, police said. Delgado continued to punch the man, then stole his hat and ran from the area.
The victim suffered serious injuries. The phrase was President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan. It is unclear if the victim was a Trump supporter. Delgado was arrested about a month later.
