WK Liquors, in Bowling Green, is popular with Western Kentucky students and was destroyed by a tornado early Saturday. “I actually got a call from a gentleman named Chad Goodrich at about 3 o’clock in the morning to tell me that my store was gone. I actually thought it was a joke, so it took me a while to really think about it,” the store’s owner, Manoj Kumar Patel told WBKO.

Western Kentucky University alumnus Natalie Kelley started a GoFundMe for Patel, writing: “He is a pillar of the WKU community, and he is one of the most caring and generous people that I have ever encountered. He knows his customers by name and truly takes the time to get to know them. A tragedy like this happening to anyone is heartbreaking, but it is especially heartbreaking to know that it happened to someone like Manoj.” As of Thursday, $14,500 had been donated.

Kelley said she was grateful for the number of donations, telling the WKU Herald: “The Bowling Green community truly took this small idea of mine and took it further than any of my expectations. I would say that I am surprised, but that is just the Spirit of WKU and the Bowling Green community perfectly displayed.”
