CAMARILLO, Calif. – A California couple caught shoplifting baby formula is facing multiple charges after authorities found about 88 cans of the substance worth an estimated $1,700 in their car.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to KCAL that Isaac Hernandez, 20, and Thalia Ruiz-Desoto, 22, both of Northridge, were arrested Nov. 3. Both have been charged with organized retail theft, grand theft and conspiracy to commit a crime.

According to store employees at the Target on Ventura Boulevard, the couple hid a large quantity of formula inside a baby stroller and walked out without paying.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that deputies intercepted the couple in the parking lot and recovered the stockpile of roughly 88 formula cans from their vehicle.

The use of the stroller in the commission of the crime, however, linked Hernandez and Ruiz-Desoto to similar thefts at an undisclosed number of stores in Westlake Village and Newbury Park, investigators told KCAL.

No actual child was ever involved in the caper, investigators said.
