Chris Shelley with CareerBuilder joins me now.  Chris, thanks so much for your time and insight here.  With so many people still out of work, some of them are trying to change job industries so what are you seeing with that? -15

CHRIS 0:18

Yeah, we’re seeing an increase in skill-based resume service on CareerBuilder and so some of the things we’re recommending is really focusing for job seekers to focus really more on their experience skills, what they’re really, really good at versus some of the previous roles that they’ve had as you switch industries and switch companies.  Some roles mean different things to different companies… so really focusing on what skills you have that can transfer into a new industry. -:40

BLAIR 2:06

So when people actually try and do that, how successful have they been at that during these times?

CHRIS 2:14

Now we’ve seen some good success as of late, a couple of examples are you know what the restaurant waiters and waitresses, the skills that they have food prep, food safety, customer service, restaurant operations, completely transferable into fast food operations, as well as personal care providers.  We’ve seen an uptick and both of those offer those opportunities out there. So changing those skills into those industries, obviously with retail we lost a lot of brick and mortar doors are still closed. We’ve seen a significant uptick in e commerce for those retail. 2:35

BLAIR: 4:10

So Chris as we wrap up here three big takeaways for someone who’s trying to change industries What do you suggest?

CHRIS 4:24

Yeah, we really recommend jobseekers to go to a job board, and get online and look to see who’s hiring. 4:27

CHRIS: 4:41

Secondly, I would say leverage the data and the resources that are out there, we push data out every week on the industry that are hiring, positions that are hiring and the locations. -:50

CHRIS: 4:55

And last but not least, leverage your network. Leverage your professional network, your personal network, your family network.  Employee referrals should be the number one hire for for an organization. So leveraging those people so they could literally walk your resume into the hiring manager to get to the top of that virtual resume stack.

BLAIR/5:18

Yeah, that networking can always go a very long way.  Chris Shelley with CareerBuilder thanks again for your time, always very helpful for so many people out there.
