Witnesses saw the driver pull out of a gas station around 8:30 a.m. then they heard a loud crash when the Jeep broke the guard rail and plunged 10 feet over the wall, slowly sinking into the Hutchinson River, WNBC reported.

Witnesses yelled to try and get the driver’s attention but got no response.

“There was nothing they could do, but they tried. It was like trying to find something with your eyes closed — in that water they couldn’t see anything,” witness John Valeate told WNBC.

Rescuers arrived later and divers recovered her body. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released. Her family was at the scene of the accident. They declined to comment to WNBC.

Pelham Manor police are investigating.
